Getting There


The Tutukaka Coast is located North East of Whangarei City in Northland, New Zealand. Driving takes approximately 2.5 hours from Auckland when heading North, or 1 hour from the Bay of Islands when heading South.

Directions from Whangarei and SH1 (South)

From Whangarei City follow the blue road signs to the Tutukaka Coast - either up Bank Street or Hatea Drive heading North.

From State Highway 1 turn right at Kensington Avenue, go straight though the first set of traffic lights then left at the 2nd set of lights (Mill Rd).

When you reach the Tikipunga shops turn right at the roundabout (Kiripaka Rd). This road becomes Ngunguru Road just after the Whangarei Falls and goes all the way to the coast. The first village you will arrive at is Ngunguru, followed by Tutukaka.

Directions from The Bay of Islands and SH1 (North)

When driving south on SH1 you will see blue signs directing you to the Tutukaka Coast via Hikurangi. In Hikurangi village turn left and follow the signs to the coast. You will wind though farmland for at least 20 minutes before arriving at Sandy Bay.

Alternative Directions from The Bay of Islands and SH1 (North)

When driving south along SH1 pass signs directing you towards the Tutukaka Coast via Hikurangi. When you arrive at a 60km zone turn right following the signs to the Tutukaka Coast & Whangarei Falls via Kamo. At the first traffic lights (Station Road) turn left and follow the road to a T-junction (Kiripaka Road). Turn left and follow this road for approximately 15mins (this road becomes Ngunguru Rd) till you arrive at Ngunguru village and then Tutukaka.
